Strætó / Buses
Strætó
The main public bus network is operated by Strætó. The company is owned by the towns that make up the greater capital region, Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Mosfellsbær and Seltjarnarnes.
Even though Strætó is run by the towns in the capital region, nowadays the route system is stretching far out from the city as can be seen here. Please visit bus.is for information about routes, time tables, fares and everything you need to know to use the public bus system.
Local public bus operations in the country side:
East: East Iceland Public Bus Service
North: Strætisvagnar Akureyrar
Westfjords: Strætisvagnar Ísafjarðar
West: Bus transport in Akranes
South: Selfoss and surrounding region.

Private buses on schedule
Apart from the bus system that Strætó and few municipals in the countryside operate, there are private bus companies that make sure we have an extensive bus network that covers a very big part of the island and the interior even:
Trex, offers daily transfers to Þórsmörk, Landmannalaugar and Skógar, every summer.
SBA-Norðurleið operates the Kjölur highland route in the summer time.
Reykjavík Excursions operates highland bus schedule during the summer months.
Flybus to and from Keflavík airport is operated by Reykjavík Excursions and Airport Direct.
Then there are many other private bus companies that offer tours on demand as private tours, scheduled day-tours to tourist spots etc.
