People of foreign backgrounds 15,5% of the population in Iceland

The newest statistics regarding population growth in Iceland have been published by Statistics Iceland.


People of foreign backgrounds are now 57,126 or 15.5% of the population in Iceland.

The migration of people is an ever-growing and very important stimulator of population growth.


In comparison, here are some statistics from the EU in January 2020. Nearly 37 million people were born outside the EU or 8.3% of all EU inhabitants (This does not include those born in another member state).


And 23 million were non-EU citizens or 5.1% of the EU’s total population. The share of foreign-born population in the EU is lower than in most high-income countries. More information regarding this can be found here.
