Interpreting services for insured persons
Any person who is covered by health insurance in Iceland is entitled to interpreting services. Interpreting services are intended for an individual who needs help in understanding and/or explaining information about their health and the health services they need.
Healthcare professional assesses the need for interpreting services if an individual does not speak Icelandic or uses sign language. A healthcare professional should plan the use of interpreting services as efficiently as possible. Interpreting services can be provided by telephone, remotely, or on-site.
The interpreting service shall cause the least inconvenience to an individual and an interpreter shall be booked in advance if it is evident that an individual does not understand Icelandic or uses sign language.
Icelandic Health Insurance only pays for interpreting services provided by self-employed healthcare providers. Institutions and health care providers pay for interpreting services that take place there.
