A special work permit is not required for citizens within the EEA, except for citizens of Bulgaria and Romania.

Member states of the European Economic Area (EEA) are as follows: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Iceland, Italia, Cyprus, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Poland, Rumania, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia, United Kingdom, Sweden, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany.

Non-EEA citizens, including citizens of Romania and Bulgaria, must have been issued a work permit before entering Iceland. Non-EEA citizens may not come to Iceland as tourists and begin working.

Employers apply for work permits, not individual employees.
