Six new ministers in the government

A new government took power at a cabinet meeting at Bessastaðir last Sunday. Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir is the new Prime Minister and Guðbjartur Hannesson the president of the parliament

Ásta Ragnheiður Jóhannesdóttir is the Minister of Social Affairs and Social Security, Össur Skarphéðinsson Minister of Industry and Foreign Affairs, Kristján Möller Transport Minister, Steingrímur Sigfússon Minister of Finance, Agriculture and Fisheries, Ögmundur Jónasson Minister of Health, Katrín Jakobsdóttir Minister of Education, Kolbrún Halldórsdóttir Minister of the Environment, Gylfi Magnússon Minister of Finance and Ragna Árnadóttir Minister of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs.

The ratio between men and women in the new government is equal and Iceland is the third country where this is so. Only three ministers from the last government have a seat in the new. Steingrímur J. Sigfússon has previously been a minister. Six new ministers are in the new government.

  • The board of the Central Bank will be changed as will the laws governing the Central Bank so that one bank manager will be appointed on the grounds of his professional education. This is part of the list of the new governments aims that was introduced today.

A monetary policy board will be introduced that will make all decisions regarding the banks devices such as the policy rate, binding obligations and cash flow. The Central Bank´s monetary policies will also be reviewed.
