Health Care Clinics and General Medical Practitioners

- Health clinics are located all over Iceland and in all neighbourhoods of Reykjavik and the surrounding area. Health care clinics offer general medical services and they are the usual places that people go to during times of sickness or health problems.
- A visit to a health clinic during daytime hours (8 am - 4 pm) costs 1.000 ISK for those who have health insurance and 5.400 ISK for those who are uninsured.
- People may go to any clinic they choose, but it is advisable to choose the clinic that is closest to your home.
- Besides general health care, clinics offer pre-natal care, pediatrics (health care for children), school health care and home nursing services.
Health Centre for Uninsured Immigrants
- The Health centre for uninsured immigrants is open from 9 am - 12 pm, Monday to Friday. It
is an open reception and no formal appointments can be made. - A visit to the Health centre costs 3.500 ISK.
- Individuals without health insurance and in need of general medical service can visit the Health centre.
- All sanitarians can communicate in Icelandic, English, German, Polish and Scandinavian languages.
- The reception is located on the 7th floor at Holtasmári 1(Hjartaverndarhúsið), 201 Kópavogur (map). Tel. 510-6500.
Medical Services after Clinic Hours
- Outside of regular clinic hours, general medical practitioners are on call at all clinics outside of the capital area.
- A visit to a health clinic outside daytime hours (4 pm - 6 pm) costs 2.600 ISK for those who have health insurance and 8.000 ISK for those who are uninsured.
- If medical service is needed outside of clinic opening hours in the capital area, for instance in the evening or at weekends, call Læknavaktin (the On Call Medical Services) at 1770.
- A visit to Læknavaktin (the On Call Medical Services) (5 pm - 11.30 pm) costs 2.200 ISK for those who have health insurance and 6.100 ISK for those who are uninsured.
- A visit to slysa- og bráðamóttöku (the emergency centre) costs 4.600 ISK for those who have health insurance and 34.500 ISK for those who are uninsured.

Medical Discount Card

Insured individuals are eligible for a discount card to reduce the cost of medical services.

When insured individuals have paid a certain amount for medical assistance in the same calendar year (Jan-Dec) they are entitled to receive a discount card from Tryggingastofnun (the States Social Security Institute). In order to receive the discount card it is important to retain all medical receipts (pink slips) and to present these when applying.
The discounted amount is as follows. For:

-Individuals, 18-70 years of age: 25.000 ISK per year

-Pensioners and disabled pensioners who pay a lower fee for health service: 6.100 ISK per year

-All children younger than 18 years of age and from the same family: 8.100 ISK per year
Medical expenses that count towards a discount card are as follows:

-A visit to a health clinic or a general practitioner’s office

-A home visit from a doctor

-A visit to the emergency centre

-A visit to a specialist

-Medical examinations
Costs that derive from physical therapy, medication, dentists and other related health services do not count towards a medical discount card.
