Health insurance - for citizens of EEA member states
Sjúkratryggingar - innan EES
Persons without health insurance must pay higher doctors and hospital fees. Persons with insurance are only required to pay part of the fees.
-
Citizens from within the EEA with a valid E-104 certificate, showing that they have been insured in another EEA country for at least six months prior to coming to Iceland, will receive health insurance and according rights as soon as their legal domicile in Iceland has been registered.
-
The E-104 certificate must be presented in person at Tryggingarstofun where a check will be made on the application for registration of residence. If this does not suffice, the applicant needs to show a confirmation from the tax office that they are currently working in Iceland.
-
Children younger than 18 years old have the same rights regarding health insurance as their parents.
-
If a person cannot provide an E-104 certificate he will have to wait for six months to apply for general health insurance or show a confirmation from the tax office that he has been working in Iceland for at least six months.
-
It is possible to insure yourself privately at an insurance company until general health care insurance is validated.
-
Everybody has the right to an interpreter when using health care services, in cases where the person/patient does not speak Icelandic. If an interpreter is required this must be requested as soon as a doctors appointment is booked. If the person/patient involved has health insurance then he has the right of reimbursement of the costs, otherwise the person/patient must pay the costs.

Further information about health insurance can be found at Tryggingastofnun and on the website www.tr.is in several languages.
