Health insurance - for Citizens of countries outside the EEA
Sjúkratryggingar-utan EES
- Those individuals who are moving to Iceland from countries outside the EEA must purchase medical insurance covering their first six months in Iceland.
- A foreign citizen from outside of the EEA will not be entitled to health insurance in Iceland until he/she has had a legal residence in Iceland for at least six months.
- The insurance must cover at least 2.000.000 ISK.
- The medical insurance must be issued by an insurance company authorized to provide services in Iceland.
- Tryggingastofnun decides on whether and when an individual is considered a member of the Icelandic social security insurance system.
- A separate medical insurance is required for a child (under the age of 16) if the child is granted a residence permit at the same time as the parent/guardian. If the parent has been residing in Iceland for over six months, the child (under the age of 16) does not require a separate medical insurance.
- All individuals who do not speak Icelandic are entitled to an interpreter. If you need an interpreter, it is important to request for one at the same time as you make your appointment with the clinic or hospital. If you have medical insurance you have the right to get costs refunded, otherwise you will need to cover the costs yourself.
