Registration for short-term stay

EEA & EFTA citizens, with the intention to live and/or work in Iceland, may enter the country without special permits and stay for three months or less before registering legal domicile in Iceland and up to six months while seeking employment. Those who intend to do so might need an identification number (ID No.) to benefit from certain services.

EEA and EFTA citizens can work here for up to three months without registering a legal domicile, but then they must have a tax card. In those cases, the employer or the party providing services for the individual in question (for example insurance companies), must apply for an ID No. at Registers Iceland.

The individual's name is then put into a special identification number register with a temporary address in Iceland, but with legal domicile abroad.

Registration for long term stay

Citizens of states that are party to the EEA and EFTA agreements, with the intention to register for a long term stay, fill out the form “Registration of an EEA or EFTA foreign national . The form serves both as an application for identification number and registration of legal domicile.

The form is available at the office of Registers Iceland or as an e-form here.

The applicant must submit the signed form in person, with supplementary documents (original or certified copies) either at Registers Iceland in Reykjavík, or at the offices of the municipalities (local authorities) or the district commissioners in rural areas. Documents sent by mail, e-mail or telefax are not accepted.

Those who intend to reside in Iceland should familiarize themselves with information about legal residence in Iceland and how to register legal domicile in Iceland before filling out the form.
