If problems arise through alcohol and drug misuse by a person, or within a family, there are various social associations available which provide assistance, advice and support.
AA - samtökin á Íslandi (AA – association in Iceland)

AA is an international association providing help and support for those individuals who fight with alcoholism. Meetings are held widely around the country in Icelandic and English. Further reading material is available in English, Icelandic and Polish. The association office is open between 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Al-Anon

The office is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Al-Anon family units are associations for relatives and friends of alcoholics where people can mingle together and talk over their mutual problems and ways of resolving them. Meetings are held in Icelandic and can be found in most parts of the country. Individuals can form groups and access reading material from Al-Anon in various languages.

SÁÁ runs rehabilitation and detoxification centre for alcoholics and other addicts, as well as having an open outpatient department. Support for relations is given. SÁÁ also offers help with preventative action. SÁÁ is located in Reykjavík and also has a centre in Akureyri.
