The educational system in Iceland is divided into four parts, the preschool system, the elementary school system, the college system (upper secondary education) and universities.

Preschool is for children under the age of six and is not mandatory. In the same year as the child turns six he/she starts elementary school in the fall.

Elementary schools are mandatory. Children and adolescents, 6-16 years of age, attend elementary schools which consist of ten grates, 1st grate to 10th grate.

After elementary schools adolescents enrol in colleges which are not compulsory. The college system in Iceland offers various courses of study, both in academic studies and vocational training.
