Vehicle inspection
- All cars registered in Iceland must get a vehicle inspection regularly (usually once a year) at an authorized vehicle inspection company to ensure that it conforms to regulations governing safety, emissions etc. Vehicle inspection companies are Frumherji (www.frumherji.is), Aðalskoðun (www.adalskodun.is) and Tékkland (www.tekkland.is).
- A slip (inspection slip) on the car's license plate indicates the year when the car must get a vehicle inspection and the last digit of the license plate the month the inspection is to take place. If the last digit is 0 the inspection should take place in October.
- Motorcycles must be inspected before 1st of July.
- The inspection slip on the license plate may not be removed and the inspection certificate must always be kept in the car.
- If the inspection sheds light on things that need repairing the car owner must have them fixed and then take the car for inspection again.
- If the vehicle tax or the mandatory car insurance has not been paid then the car won't pass inspection.
- If a car is not brought to vehicle inspection in time the car owner is fined. The fine is called omission-fine and is collected two months after the car was supposed to be inspected.
