  • In Iceland, the minimum age of requirement to drive is 17. Driving lessons must be taken and one must pass a driving test before being allowed to drive a car. After passing the test, one receives a licence which must be kept on ones person while driving a car.
  • Those intending to dwell in Iceland for some length of time must apply for an Icelandic driving licence. Others living in Iceland for a shorter time may use their foreign licences.
  • Individuals are admissible to use their foreign driving licence upto three months after entering the country. However, after three months they have to apply for an Icelandic licence if their intension is to drive a car.
  • EEA citizens holding new European driving licences can use them in Iceland and need not apply for Icelandic licences.
  • Citizens of countries outside the EEA need to take both a written and a practical test and must show their foreign licence to receive an Icelandic driving licence.
  • Car owners must insure their cars, pay Icelandic road tax on them and have them inspected (MOT tested) regularly.
  • Those wishing to import cars have to pay customs duties on them, register the cars here and have them inspected.
